A scenic drive with high level views over the whole of Breadalbane. A roads 130m. Unclassified 10m.
From Callander head toward Stirling in the A84 and turn left at Doune, (Doune Castle on right at far end of village). Continue for 3 miles then turn left onto the A9 dual lane road toward Perth.
After about 5 miles watch for a left turn at Braco signed to Crieff - take this road, observing Braco castle on your right. Continue to observe route signs via Muthill (with it's ancient norman tower) until you reach crieff. Turn right at the town centre sign and continue through Crieff towards Perth.
After about 2 miles and some VERY BAD BENDS you reach Gilmerton where you turn left toward Dunkeld & Aberfeldy.
This lovely road now climbs rapidly affording good views to the north west. At the top of the climb, pass the Fulford Inn on the left and continue on the main road at the next junction (where you can clearly see on the right the earthworks of a Roman Camp). You are now in the Sma' Glen which you follow down to the foot of the hill (toilets here) before turning right over the river Almond to begin climbing again towards the Corrymuchloch moor with splendid open views all round.
About four miles up this road and at the Amulree school, turn left onto the GlenQuaich road. In about 3 miles and after the end of the loch, you reach a sharp right bend to cross a hump back bridge after which you may find a gate closed over the road. Open the gate (then close it!) before proceeding up a frightening climb to the summit of the glen where astounding views may be seen over the Grampian mountains.
Continue carefully and watch out for the second gate over the road and the Z bends near the bottom of the hill. Turn right then left at the main road (toilets at the loch side) . Stop a while at Kenmore and take a wee walk round the shore from the lochside carpark.
When you've had your fill, continue westwards to return home by Killin and lochearnhead.
