Scottish Landscape Photography - - - - Find Locations
When I started this website several years ago I saw photography simply as a means of illustrating articles and 'decorating' the pages. Since then the photography has developed into a hobby in its own right - and has cost more than a few pennies just to find the equipment best suited to my needs.
Generally speaking, photographs created for the internet do not need the pin sharp definition required for images which are to be printed to large sizes. On the other hand, when you are trying to catch the interest of the potential visitor to the area the images need to be attractive, well composed and honestly representative of the subject.
I never will claim to be a great photographer and those who visit my photo galleries will see the evidence of that , especially in some of the older shots. Do visit the galleries (left) to see the kind of scenery to be found. This map will show you some of the best locations.
For those who want to practice their art - photography - the Trossachs area offers a fabulous variety of subjects, moods and weather.
Argyll
This is the area to visit if you want to spend time seeing and photographing vast seascapes on the west side or the magnificent fjiord like sea lochs surrounded by rugged mountains and forest clad hillsides.
Loch Lomond
This central area of the National Park is the 'fun place' where most of the watersport activities take place on the sheltered - though not always placid - waters of Loch Lomond. The more dramatic and interesting photographs will be obtained at the north end of the loch and from Rowardennan and further north on the east shore. The east side of Ben Lomond is accessed via Aberfoyle and a lovely quiet (sometimes) road leading to Inversnaid and the west end of Loch Katrine. Loch Ard and Loch Chon very often produce great reflections, but be careful where you park - it's a narrow twisting road.
Trossachs
This is probably the most scenic part of the National Park where the large number of lochs of all sizes and with all kind of surroundings make some great subjects for the landscape photographer. The mountains here are not insurmountable barriers when lugging your photography equipment and most lochs are accessible on at least one shore by road. A fairly short hike from the road will let you get that unusual shot which the car traveller never sees. This is also one of the best places for the wildlife photographer to ply his art. There are roe deer, red deer, eagles, osprey, buzzards and of course most of the smaller raptors. A quiet approach may allow you to creep up on the red squirrel, fox, badger or even a wildcat.
If waterfalls interest you, try the Bracklinn falls at Callander or the Leny falls about 4 miles north of Callander. Some lovely smaller cataracts can be found on some of the tumbling burns on hillsides but these will involve a little effort in getting there.
Here also you may access some of the more remote spots by bike as there is an excellent network of cycleways and woodland tracks.
Breadalbane
Breadalbane is the land of giants - giant mountains which can make dramatic shots if you find the right spot. Also take a look at Killin with its splendid waterfalls, historic multi arched bridge and the atmospheric burial island of the Clan MacNab. You can drive up the hill road to the Ben Lawers centre to obtain some great landscape photographs looking down into the valleys from about 1400ft.
