Stronachlachar Southern Villages Stirling Perth Crieff St Fillans Inversnaid Crianlarich Arrochar Cruise Loch Lomond About Rowardennan - on the West Highland Way and the start of the Ben Lomond walkRowardennan is barely a village - a hotel, a few houses and a youth hostel comprise this small settlement - peaceful through the winter but for a few walkers, but suddenly one of the busiest places on the loch when warmer weather arrives. The village of Rowardennan is reached by way of a 10 mile road - the B837 which starts at Drymen on the A811. The greater part of this road is single track which means it can be a bit of a frustration when you are in a hurry to start your walk / picnic / whatever you have planned. Balmaha is passed on the way - if you have the time and can park, it's worth stopping for a while to admire the views over the marina and to the island in the loch. Whatever your plans, TAKE YOUR TIME on this road. At Rowardennan under the trees you will find a spacious and attractively situated car park with public conveniences. Close to the car park is a small sandy beach and the pier where cruise boats call through the visitor season. The waterfront is backed by the trees, some of which overhang the beach providing welcome shade. The West Highland Way passes along the shore here and the Rowardennan Youth Hostel provides welcome shelter for the walker. Rowardennan Youth Hostel (SYHA)
Rowardennan
G63 0AR Rowardennan is also the start point for the most popular route up Ben Lomond. The 'tourist route' leaves the back of the car park and meanders gently through woodlands before becoming a little more demanding as the path steepens. There is an engineered path most of the way up but the last few hundred feet are over rough terain waiting for the unwary ankle. Most walkers return by the same route but an alternative descent is available via Ptarmigan which lies between Ben Lomond and the loch. If climbing Ben Lomond, be prepared for sudden changes of weather, wear suitable footwear and have waterproofs and a snack with you just in case. Probably the worst thing about Rowardennan is the return trip - by the same single track road!
