a cottage by loch Lomond for 4 to 7 personsWelcome to Taobh-an-Allt, a lovely historic cottage on the shores of Loch Lomond!

In 1745, while Bonnie Prince Charlie led the Jacobite army down through the Highlands, and Rob Roy’s son besieged the Loch Lomond-side barracks at Inversnaid, the manager of the whisky distillery at Tarbet engaged himself in a rather more peaceful endeavour: building his home. And the house he built, Taobh-an-Allt, ‘the place by the stream’, now offers you the unique opportunity to holiday in a cottage made romantic through its historical associations, idyllic through its loch- and burn-side setting, and charming through such traditional features as the Jacobean four-poster in the master bedroom and the original stone wall in the lounge.

The Accommodation

Taobh-an-Allt can accommodate up to 7 people, and its arrangement and location make it ideal for almost any kind of holiday, whether you’re looking for a romantic break, a family vacation, or somewhere for a group of friends to enjoy the best of the Highlands.

Taobh-an-Allt comprises:

  • First Bedroom. A beautiful Jacobean-style four-poster, with wardrobe, chest-of-drawers and armchair; and an en-suite bathroom with bath, shower and WC.
  • Second Bedroom. An unusual bunk bed, with a double bed on the bottom and a single on top, chest-of-drawers and bedside cupboards; a curtained archway leads to a separate shower room with wardrobe, shower cubicle, and space for clothes storage and ironing.
  • Hall, WC, Stairs. This floor also contains an entrance hall, a separate WC, and an open staircase leading upstairs to the lounge and the kitchen/diner.
  • Lounge. A very comfortable two-seater sofa and a three-seater sofa which opens into a double bed; TV and DVD/Video – and shelves stocked with a wide range of books, videos, and games. But perhaps you’ll notice first the splendid original stone wall from 1745. There’s also a separate seating area with two chairs and a table.
  • Kitchen/diner. Splendidly-appointed kitchen with all mod cons: four-ring hob and oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine/tumble dryer, and of course all the crockery and cutlery that you could need. Large extendable pine table with seating for up to seven people.
  • Secret children’s room. If you’re on a family vacation, small children love the tiny secret playroom hidden in the walls, with its own door, window and chairs – and plenty of games to keep them occupied. We’ve also catered for the little ones with a high chair, cot and safety gate for the stairs.
  • Garden/Parking. Outside, there’s a large garden with a stream bubbling along the back and a small pond – and a table and chairs to sit out and enjoy the views. There’s also a shed to store any extra gear, and private parking for two vehicles.

Location and Things to Do

Taobh-an-Allt is located in the pretty village of Tarbet on the shores of Loch Lomond, at the heart of the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. It is within 45 minutes of Glasgow Airport and City Centre, with rail station within ½ mile. The village has a tea room, post office and Tourist Information Centre; there are larger shops and restaurants at Arrochar (2 miles).

The cottage is ideally located for sightseeing, from the delights of Loch Lomond itself yards from the front door to the many attractions of Inveraray only 25 miles away. Rob Roy Country, Stirling, Glencoe and Oban are all just an hour or two’s drive.

For the more active, a range of water sports can be enjoyed on the loch; and golf, pony trekking and fishing are all available locally. And the walking could hardly be bettered, from gentle lochside strolls through more strenuous hill walks to an ascent of mighty Ben Lomond or the famous peaks of the Arrochar Alps.
