The people of Callander, Ontario are just as proud of their Celtic
roots as are the people of Callander, Scotland. They have their own
highland games, pipe bands, highland dancing teams and have adopted the
Morrison tartan in honour of their town's founder - George Morrison.
They even have their own Scottish festival website - 'CeltFest' where just as in Scotland,
people with Scottish (and other) roots come to enjoy the spectacle of a Scottish event on
the other side of the Atlantic ocean.
Canada spans
the North American continent from east to west and Ontario lies roughly in the centre of
the country, north of the great lakes and to the west of Quebec.
Callander is on the south east shore of Lake Nipissing and about 300k west of Ottawa and 300k north of Toronto. It's just a few mile south of the larger town of North Bay.
Callander Ontario has much in common with Callander Scotland.
There has been talk of a 'twinning' of the two towns now for some time. Whilst we wait for the politicians to sort that out, two web sites - this one in Callander, Scotland and the Celtfest web site in Callander Ontario have decided to try to organise a 'virtual twinning' of the two towns.
Watch this space over the next few months to see what develops as we discuss how best to link and promote Callander and Callander - the twin towns of Scotland and Canada.
In August 2003 two residents of Callander Ontario visited Callander Scotland bringing greetings from the community in Callander (O) and presented Callander (S) with a poster of their Celtfest celebration and an advertising mat which includes the new logo. Best wishes to our Canadian 'twin'.
