On
May 1934 the famous Dionne Quintuplets were born. Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, the village
physician was called on to help bring the babies into the world. This singular event
brought fame to the Dionne Quints, Dr. Dafoe and to the village of Callander, Ontario.
In the ensuing years Callander and the surrounding area become a
major tourist attraction with as many as two or three thousand people visiting the babies
daily.
To this day, callander and area continues to benefit from this singular event with
national and international tourists. Its hard
to believe that the birth of
these quints had such an impact on North America but the fact that they lived, and that
along with Niagara Falls this was about the only real "world class"entertainment
around made for a great success.
The great grandmother of a present day resident told her granddaughter that they traveled to Callander for their honeymoon to see the children. Her two maiden and great aunts also made the trip to see the quints!
