Callander War Memorial The Trossachs Scotland

Description of the memorial (see names)

In Callander's Ancaster Square, on the south side and facing the old St Kessog's Church is Callander's memorial to the men of the parish who died in World Wars one and two.

The plaques bearing the names and other inscriptions are very well preserved and legible although some of the intricate carvings on the stone column are showing signs of weathering and should be restored when funds permit.

The memorial takes the form of a roughly cubic base standing on a raised bed planted with perrenial bushes and shrubs. A circular column topped with a carved 'creature?' stands on top of the cubic base.

The memorial to the men who died in the 1939-1945 war are cast on an oval plaque fixed on the upper part on the monument by a metal band.

On the north facing side of the cubic base is a memorial plaque bearing the inscription:

In grateful commemoration of the men
of this town and parish who died
in the service of their country
in the great war. 1914 - 1918.
"CUM NAD CHUIMHNE"

The Gaelic words " Cum nad chuimhne" translate to "Keep in remembrance". The upper part of this plaque bears an image showing a kilted warrior holding a 'fiery cross' - the ancient call to arms of the highland clans of this region.

On the remaining three sides are rectangular plaques bearing the names of the local men who died in the 1914-1918 war.
