About Balquhidder Glen

The village of Balquhidder lies near the head of Loch Voil, 1¾ miles west of the line of the A84 as it sweeps north from Callander to Lochearnhead,

The village of Balquhidder - it's full name is 'the Kirktoun of Balquhidder' shares its name with that of the glen in which it stands, Balquhidder Glen, which extends westwards for 12 miles from the A84.

The glen extends west from the A84 trunk road for about eleven miles, surrounded by forests and mountains before blending into the foothills of mountains such as Stob Binnian, Stob a Choin, Bein Tulachean, An Caisteal and Beinn Chabhair which lie north of Loch Katrine and south of Crianlarich.

In past times, the Glen was home to around 2000 farmers and crofters including the families of Clan McLaren and Clan MacGregor. After the 1745 Jacobite rising the glens were largely cleared of small farmers leaving only traces of field boundaries and ruined buildings to evidence their tenure .

With now only around 200 residents, Balquhidder is a magnificently unspoilt example of Scotland's beauty and complex history.

Location

Cragmhor can be found as follows:

On the A84 trunk road, 2 miles south of Lochearnhead and 2 miles north of Strathyre village, turn off at King's House Hotel. Opposite the King's House a minor road is signed to Balquhidder and Rob Roy's grave. Follow this minor road for about 2 miles, pass the church on the right and turn left opposite the red telephone box. Cross the picturesque hump backed bridge and take the next turn left. Cross a second bridge and Cragmhor is about 200 yards on your right.
