Monumental inscriptions at Little Leny, Callander

The site is accessed via the defunct railway line (now a cycleway) which heads west from Callander at Callander meadows. Cross the bridge carrying the track over the river then after about 250 m, leave the track via the ‘wishing gate’ on the left and cross the wetland to the walled enclosure visible among the trees. In very wet periods, the site is inaccessible here.

The numbers below refer to the memorials marked on the appended plan. Stones which have no visible markings or which are not obvious grave markers have not been shown unless they bear some feature such as decoration which makes them noteworthy.

Overall condition of the walled enclosure:

The walled enclusure, constructed mainly of un-dressed stone is in serious need of repair and clearance of nettle and some bramble. Some parts of the wall appear to be near to collapse and will indoing so destroy any monuments set into the wall.

The condition of some memorials is such that another few winters frost damage will render some of  them completely illegible.

The Inscriptions :

Inscriptions are reproduced as seen on the monuments. Where parts are illegible, those parts are represented by ???.

In the walled Buchanan enclosure:

E1 This table style monument was illegible when I visited due to moss. Better eyes than mine may be able to de-cypher some of the inscription. It appears to commemorate more than one person judging by the length of the inscription.

E2 A memorial approx 18inches square set into the wall above head height.
