A Self Catering Cottage by the Old Mill Stream
By-passed many years ago by the modern road into the Pass of Leny, the old mill hamlet
of Kilmahog provides respite from the pace of modern living.
This delightful white painted terraced cottage is on the old road, which was at one
time the main road into the highlands, and is now a cul de sac barely wide enough for a
car.
The very name of the hamlet - Kilmahog - is derived from the ancient language of the
Scots and means the 'cell or chapel of St Chug'. A place of refuge even in those far off
days.
The cottage faces west toward the Trossachs hills and the old mill stream (the mill lade),
which burbles quietly on the other side of the road and through one of the original
mills which were once the lifeblood of Kilmahog.
The mill wheel is still there but no longer powers the mill which has become one of the
attractions of the area and will serve you with its 'all day breakfast' if you don't feel
like cooking.
Just down the road is another mill shop with its own resident friendly highland 'bull'
- he will feed from your hand, but watch out for his 'handlebars'!

The mill stream flows past the front of the cottage having exited the river Leny close
to the nearby Lade Inn, which is 5 minutes walk away, where meals and refreshments may be
had. Free Live entertainment, usually Scottish Ceilidhs, are held most Saturday nights.
Further upstream is the Pass of Leny and the spectacular Falls of Leny with a fenced
footpath to facilitate access.
Lochs lubnaig and Venachar which offer fishing and boating are nearby to the north and
west.
The two 'Woollen Mills' in Kilmahog offer a variety of knitwear, tweeds and other
fabrics and one of them serves a famous 'all day breakfast'.
The small town of Callander with supermarkets and an excellent selection of restaurants,
cafes and many interesting shops is in easy level walking distance - about half a mile.
About 20 minutes by car takes you to Loch Katrine, the heart of the Trossachs, and
