The Scottish Midge and what to do about it

midgeanim.gif (7434 bytes)The midge is just a wee beastie - with a big impact. There have been letters, books and poems written about it. The midge has been sworn at in countless languages. It costs the tourism industry millions of pounds every year. And still very little has been done to spare us the attentions of the pest. Someone came up with a way of ridding huge areas of the pest but the conservation lobby stopped it from happening - they said it was an important part of the food cycle and that removing the midge would have severe effects upon our native wildlife.

I suppose this means we're stuck with it!........... Listen to the 'Midgie Song'

Well, maybe so, but it doesn't mean we have to be driven away from our beautiful countryside.

What can we do to survive?midgies.gif (2952 bytes)

There are some basic rules:

Avoid midge areas when they are likely to be at their worst:

  • They love warm humid weather
  • They love stagnant or still water
  • They love partial shade - trees & bushesmidgies2.gif (4853 bytes)

Don't let them reach you

Don't open all the windows in your caravan, cabin etc when the pest is likely to come in - and bite you as you sleep.

  • Use fly killer indoors
  • Use repellent midge candles o coils out of doors
  • Use the famous 'midge hood' in badly affected areas

Use a good brand of midge repellent on your skin:
