The Area

The view down the loch

The peaceful location makes this the ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and to experience the total tranquility of the Scottish Highlands in an area steeped with history and the legends and tradition of the people who once lived in this famous glen.

With easy access to Balquhidder with its ancient church and Rob Roy's grave.

The Monachyle Mhòr Hotel with bar and top-class restaurant open to non-residents is nearby.

Rob Roy and Mary MacGregor lived at Monachyle Tuarach when they were newly married and Mary and their children lived here for the period while Rob Roy was an outlaw on the run from the redcoats. When he could he joined his family here clandestinely.   Later, once he was pardoned,  they all moved house further up Balquidder Glen to Inverlochlarig near Invernenty.

Access

  • Vehicle access to Monachyle Tuarach is from the east end of Loch Voil by a 3.8 mile farm track. Typically of many farm tracks in this area, it is more suited to 4x4 vehicles but unless your ground clearance is very low a careful driver should have few problems. The owner uses this track constantly in a 'Fiesta'.

OR ALTERNATIVELY

  • We can arrange for you to leave your vehicle at Monachyle (on the other side of the loch ) and we can collect you by boat for the very short trip over the beautiful (and usually calm) Monachyle Narrows - the narrow waterway between Lochs Voil and Doine.
