The Real Food Cafe at Tyndrum.
UK BEST TAKE AWAY AWARD

wpe1.jpg (132893 bytes)This advert is placed here by the website author as a big thank you to Sarah Heward, the proprieter of the Real Food Cafe. After a great day out on the hills, I called in to the cafe by chance as the nearest restaurant was closed. It was a happy accident as it led to the discovery that food can still taste good, at a reasonable price and can be eaten in comfortable surroundings which are spotlessly clean.

The proprieter insisted on preparing fresh chips as she was not prepared to serve up 'old' chips which were not at their best.

Friers logo white background.jpg (137875 bytes)They just got an award for the food quality - see logo right hand side!  Now they have the 'UK best take away award!!!!

Now open for breakfast from 7 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays (only)

Sorry I have no photos of the cafe as I had no film left in the camera.

Find the Real Food Cafe on the south side of the A85 at the eastern end of Tyndrum.

September 2005 - Fort William.

Came down from Ben Nevis - Time 1700 - drove all the way from  Fort William to 'Real Food Cafe' at Tyndrum and put up with the hunger 'til I got there. Well worth the wait as not only was my half chicken and chips just spot-on, they can also serve you with a bottle of beer if you eat on the premises - good beer too!

Scottish Fish & Chip Café wins BBC UK Best Take Away Award

The Real Food Café in Tyndrum, Perthshire, was awarded the title of UK Best Take Away from the BBC at the recent Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards.

The Café, which combines a traditional fish and chip menu with a range of salads and more unusual items such as Vegetarian Tempura, was transformed out of a former Little Chef that stood on the site for over twenty years.

The new owners, Steve and Sarah Wolsey, were delighted to receive the award, especially in winning it after having only been open for business for six months.

On presenting the award Shiela Dillon, presenter of the Radio 4 Food Programme, said of the Café

"The Real Food Café in Tyndrum, Perthshire is an ex-Little Chef that in less than a year has transformed itself into a beacon of excellence – the best fish and chips its many nominees had ever tasted.

The sourcing is as good as it could be. Its menu is traditional takeaway Scottish fare – battered sausages, burgers, fish and chips – but prepared from locally sourced, top-quality ingredients."

Chairman of the judging panel was the well-known chef Raymond Blanc. Also at the Awards ceremony were celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsey and Oz Clarke, all of whom had chance to sample The Real Food Café fare and chatted with Steve and Sarah about the Café.

The Café is situated on the busy A82 tourist trail to the Scottish Highlands and Islands as well as being on the mid-point of the seventy-nine mile walking route of the West Highland Way.

Sarah, who sources the ingredients and does most of the cooking said

"We are delighted to win such an important award, especially since the award results out of the nominations of our customers. We source the highest quality fish and meat products and work hard to ensure that our cooking is to the highest standard."

The UK Best Take Away title comes not long after the Café was awarded the Sea Fish Industry Authority Friers Quality Award, this being held by only five hundred of the approximately eleven thousand fish and chip outlets in the UK.

Peter Irvine, author of the definitive Scottish guidebook "Scotland The Best" includes The Real Food Café in his 2006 edition saying

"Excellent food for the road, conscientiously prepared, seriously sourced, the antitheses of frozen, fast and couldn’t care less. The new destination on the way North West".
